Do Employees Want More Or Better Benefits? You Make The Call

Many companies offer a range of benefits and perks to workers as an incentive to attract top talent and increase employee satisfaction and loyalty.

These might include a work car, flexible hours, extra holidays, subsidized childcare, health insurance, or even professional development, free lunches, or gym memberships.

However, there is no clear evidence that employee satisfaction is highly correlated with the size of the benefits package. Instead, research suggests that employee benefits that are the most effective are those which generate "positive social exchange relationships" between employers and employees.

The benefits most appreciated are those which the employees consider valuable. In the United States, where healthcare is privatized, strong health benefits is a top priority for employees.

In some cases, demographics may determine the type of benefits that are considered most valuable. For example, women have traditionally placed more value on flexible work arrangements, while young workers value professional development programs to help with career advancement.

The more benefits, the better, especially for recruiting. However, if pressed, I believe that most employees would desire a higher wage versus some benefits being offered. Flextime and healthcare are the two exceptions, in my opinion.
